\2When you start your scene-carrier you always begin at the very bottom. You will find how the people above yourself in the scene-hierarchy will spit on you. I know. I have experienced it myself.
I got my first contact with the scene when I followed a friend of mine to TCC '93 in Gothenburg, Sweden. I can clearly remember how some of the so called "cool" guys laughed at me and my feeble attempts to make music. There are no room for new beginners in the scene. To get into a higher cast you have to be in possession of some sort of talent - or much time and money. For two years now I have more or less been in the scene and it is first now that I am accepted. Now, when some people know who I am. Nowadays, some people like my music and I am a coeditor of this magazine.
But what happens when you gather some fame?
You will be arrogant yourself. I have started to look down at some people and their productions. I look down at writers as Plugster and mags as Buzz even if I haven't been an editor myself until now. I look down at groups that only contain swappers, who states that they are going to make demos, intros and games. I look down at swappers who uses language like "dIz iz uLTRAMASTa sENDIn' yo a kEWl lETTa!!!" etc. I look down at people that send me games.
I look down at people and I feel really ashamed because I do that.
I remember that I once said that I never would be arrogant towards people, no matter how famous I got. I am not famous by now but still I am arrogant. This fact has made me think a lot. I think that being arrogant is in mankind's nature. When you feel that you are better in any subject than another person you start to look down at him/her. I'm trying to resist that infantile instinct but it's too powerful. I really do hate it.
Are there then any solutions?
I can see a couple of them but none seems very attractive to me. First of all, you can quit the scene. No, I won't do that. Well, then you can make sure that you won't get famous in any way. No, that's nothing for me. There is now only one possibility left. Let it control you!
